The partnership between Mid Michigan College and the Morey Foundation to improve educational opportunities throughout the mid-Michigan region recently expanded to include Lifelong Learning classes at the Morey Education Center in Shepherd.

“In the last few years the College has revived Lifelong Learning opportunities for community members who are interested in learning more about fun topics or developing a new hobby,” says Scott Mertes, Vice President of Academic Affairs & Community Outreach at Mid.

Classes are taught by local experts and artisans, and hosted online, on campus, and at locations throughout Mid’s surrounding communities. The newest location is the Morey Education Center, which is also the site of the FlexTech High School.

“We are excited to expand our partnership with Mid Michigan College to include more varied opportunities for lifelong learners at the Morey Education Center,” says Erik Spindler, Executive Administrator of The Morey Foundation.

“We’ve already launched a robust series of cooking classes at the Morey Education Center covering topics such as sauces, seasonal vegetables, meats, apices, and cooking on a budget. We also plan to offer dance classes, such as Tango and Swing, in the near future,” adds Annette Sturdavant, Community Outreach and Advancement Specialist at Mid Michigan College.

Additionally, Mid Michigan College is continuing to look for more opportunities to help high school students jumpstart their college education. Dual enrollement courses that allow students to take college courses while still in high school at little to no cost have been a highlight of the college’s partnership with the Morey Education Center. Now, Mid Michigan College is planning to strengthen the opportunities available to Morey FlexTech High School students by offering an early college program, which allows enrolled students to earn their high school diplomas while also earning college credentials through Mid Michigan College. Early college students can choose to complete their full associate degree before they graduate from high school.

“We’re really grateful for the relationship we have with the Morey Foundation and the Morey Education Center. Both of our organizations strive to expand educational opportunities, and together we can make a significant impact within the communities we serve,” says Mertes.
