With the upcoming presidential election in 2020, the City of Mt. Pleasant is looking to hire a number of election inspectors.

“We typically need around 80-plus workers for a presidential year. We probably have half or a little more of what we need right now,” says Jeremy Howard, city clerk for the City of Mt. Pleasant.

The duties of an election inspector include performing polling preparation and check list tasks prior to opening the polls at 7:00 a.m., assisting with processing absentee ballots if such ballots are counted at the precincts, and maintaining accurate records during the voting process.

Election inspectors work 2-6 days per year, and have either 8 or 16-hour shifts that pay $10.00 per hour.

“Not all workers will be needed for every election in some years,” Howard explains. “We appoint workers for each election at the time of the election and then notify workers appointed. Presidential years we need more workers, especially in November.”

To qualify for the position, you must be a registered voter in the State of Michigan and have “sufficient education and clerical ability to perform the duties,” describes the job posting.

“We will be training workers January 2020 and then likely again mid-year,” says Howard. “Trainings are typically 2-4 hours and are paid.”

Applications are always accepted at the city clerk’s office, located at City Hall, 320 W. Broadway St. For more information, call (989) 779-5361 or visit the city’s website.
